Filed under: Collectibles — Tags: — countryjoe @ 5:49 pm

We acquired a nice lot of over a hundred vintage postcards and a lot vintage pinback buttons and some medals last week from an estate through another dealer, along with other goodies. Have just started to peek thru the cards and looks like a lot of neat stuff. And the buttons are great. Will be adding the postcards to our postcard shopt little by little between working our other collectibles. Also will post some of the pinback buttons here as I go, but stop by our Antiques & Collectibles as all won’t be shown here.

Renwal Dollhouse Furniture

Filed under: Collectibles — Tags: — countryjoe @ 3:33 pm

Somewhere back in the 1950’s I can remember roaming through the 5 & 10¢ store, Woolworths or Kressege’s in search for some toys to buy. I normally headed for the plastic car or military models, sometimes to the cast metal soldiers, cowboys etc. Usually nearby was the Renwal cars, trucks etc. and next to that was the Renwal dollhouse furniture, being a guy I didn’t have a dollhouse but I remember the furniture was pretty neat. Great details, scale etc. and there was probably a hundered different items. I always had a thing for miniatures so I guess that is what attracted me. Anyway I never had any dollhouse furniture.

Many years later when I started doing the flea markets I bought a bunch of Renwal furniture and a tin dollhouse at a yard sale. Next time I set up at the market I put the stuff out and sold most of in in a short time, so I watched and bought more when I saw it. Sold out quickly again. Since then I’ve become a steady buyer and seller of Renwal dollhouse furniture.

A little bit about Renwal dollhouse furniture.
The Renwal Company, a maker of some of the finest plastic toys and doll house furniture during the late 1940s through the 1950s. Many of these fine toys that were produced by Renwal are: airplanes, play guns, boats, helmets, washing machines, baby items and other household items. In the dollhouse furniture department there are pieces for every room in your dollhouse. Living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and nursery plus the play room and laundry. Lots of neat accessores such as lamps, radios, clocks, vacuum cleaner, ironing board, sewing machine etc. Toys were plastic and many were left in hot attics and have warped, but many were also packed away carefully and have survived, some in great condition and some in played with condition.

Don’t know if kids nowadays have dollhouses but it seems a lot of baby boomers want to recreate and remember their past, they seem to be my best customers.

Some Renwal furniture in the shop.

Carte de Visite, Cabinet Cards, Tintypes, Old Photographs

Hi all, just added a bunch of neat old photographs to our shop. Some carte de visites, cabinet cards and tintypes. Actually these can make a neat collection if you concentrate and clothing styles or some of the props shown in the photos. Some neat Victorian furniture shows up now and then. Some collectors look for baby photos or old wedding pictures. Also tintypes of some interesting scenes can be found. Now and then someone is lucky enough to find a famous person like Abe Lincoln or some of the more famous indian chiefs. Many Civil War era cabinet cards and tintypes have been found by the more observent hunters. Images of antique autos are very popular collectibles.
And if you ever want to change your relatives go find some early photos and make an album of handpicked family members, who’s gonna know.

Carte de visites are usually approx. 2-1/2 x 4-1/8 inches in size. Cabinet cards measure approx. 4-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. Tintypes come in many different sizes.

Collecting Kitchen Trivets

Filed under: Collectibles — Tags: — countryjoe @ 8:03 pm

trivetkitchen trivetAssociated Press Advertising Ashtray

Got some small spots on the kitchen wall you don’t know what to do with? Trivets can fill up those spaces above the cabinets or around the windows etc. There are lots of different shapes, sizes and designs out there for your picking. most are made of cast iron but there are also a lot of brass trivets out there to. Maybe some nice antiques ones or newer ones depending on your wallet. Some of the antique trivets that were used to hold the old sad irons had advertising casted into the design. Then you had the more decorative types for resting pots or bowls of hot food on. You can usually spot the antique trivets by their castings and normally are a bit heavier the the newer ones. Somewhere in the 1970’s probably due to the Bicentennial there was a whole new flock of trivets being made. Now they are making them in China etc. The newer ones just don’t have the quality of the vintage trivets.

Many years ago well about 30, there was a luncheonette / restaurant near the Englishtown Flea Market that we use to go to after the market, they had hundreds of trivets on the walls, around the windows, over the doors and any other place they could fit them. Many of the trivets were given to them by the market dealers that ate there.

A few vintage kitchen trivets in the shop.

Collecting Advertising Ashtrays

Filed under: Collectibles — Tags: — countryjoe @ 3:32 pm

Advertising ashtrays are another sort of endless collection that you can get into. There are probably thousands of different advertising ashtrays out there. One could collect a single field like service stations, restaurants, hotels, motels, casinos, souvenirs from most anywhere etc. Or maybe just from your city or state. Or from different countries if your an armchair traveler.
Hey you can just collect by color or shape, whatever turns you on. There are no rules in this collecting game.

They were made in glass, china, pottery, plastic and many metals, copper, brass etc.
Also came in many different sizes and shapes. Many can be picked up for a few dollars and up. Check the yard sales, auctions, flea markets, antique shops and online. Many come in figural shapes also. Happy collecting.

Stop by the shop lots of neat collectibles added recently.

Collecting Vintage Advertising Thermometers

Bought a small collection of vintage advertising and other thermometers about a week or so ago. They actually make a neat collection, now I wonder why I never collected them myself. Oh well I guess you can’t collect everything, but I’ve tried.  Great to hang in those little spots where nothing else fits in. Also were a few souvenir thermometers, a few kitchen related, candy or chocolate thermometers and some regular household types.

A few are pictured below:

Character Spoon & Fork Sets, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto etc.

Bought a neat little pile of character and advertising spoons over the weekend. Just started working on them today.
Here are some of the Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto and Smurf spoon and fork sets. What’s nice is you don’t always find sets. Great stuff to add to your Disney etc. collections. Or your little “blue character” pile. Probably get to the others over the weekend or early next week.

Vintage Hero Cap Gun, Pet Cap Gun

Hero Cap Gun Pet Cap Gun

I picked up two neat items in the last few weeks, actually bought a lot of neat collectibles. One is a nice vintage Pet cap gun. It is marked ‘PET’ on the sides above trigger, under the barrel is a faint ‘Made in USA’. I presume it’s a Hubley from the 50’s. Very good working condition with slight scratches.

The other is a Steven’s Hero cap gun from the late 1940’s. Has ivory colored plastic grips which are warped slightly probably from heat. Five inches overall in length.Works good, great condition, doesn’t look like it was ever played with. Made in USA.

Vintage Collectible Gillette Safety Razors

Filed under: Collectibles — countryjoe @ 5:50 pm

old style gillette razor  new gillette razor  gillette tech razor  gillette super speed

The Gillette Company was born in September 1901 as The American Safety Razor Co. By the next June the name was changed to the Gillette Safety Razor Co.
Gillette acually started selling razors in 1903 with a three piece razor consisting of a two part blade holder with a screw on handle called the Standard and Old Type which used a blade with 3 holes in it.

Around the end of the 1920’s the slotted blade came out. The New, New Improved and Tech were all three piece razors that used the slotted blade. Then in the end of the 1940’s they went on to a twist to open (TTO) type razor with trap doors called the Super Speed with many variations. The adjustable razor was made in the late 1950’s where you turned a dial on the handle which adjusted the blade angle. They also made a Techmatic in 1965 which used an injector blade but only lasted a few years. And a few one year only razors such as the TV, Toggle and the 195 model were made. Some where in the mid 1970’s Gillette stopped making the double edge razors in the U.S.A.
A few vintage safety razors in the shop.

Vintage Advertising Fans

advertising fan    columbia trust fan

Vintage advertising fans sort of fall into the ephemera catagory and the advertising area. Actually many can be added as ‘go alongs’ with other collections. Such as the Hopalong Cassidy, Bond Bread fan shown. There is also one shown that eleven different businesses are advertised.
Companies have been advertising on hand fans for a long time. Fans were usually cardboard with a wooden handle. But other type were also made. Most had nice images on one side and advertising on the back. Actually there are some companies that still give out fans out to their customers. These “advertising fans” promoted automobiles, beverages, candies, perfumes, local stores and businesses, hotels, banks, insurance companies, medicines etc. Many were used in smaller towns and cities for local businesses.

We have a few neat advertising fans in the shop, they are scattered out a bit so use our shop search for “advertising fans’.
