about me Whether it's a trashy little must-have piece of kitsch from the local $2 'sh*t shop' or a genuine 1950s collectible piece from a street stall in Verona, they just keep coming, thick and fast! These pics are of just a few that are currently lying about, collected between August & December this year. The bulk of the collection, approximately 200, is packed away for safekeeping, but I dream of the day when my home can accommodate a custom-built display room. What snowy bliss!
about my collections I'm incredibly lucky because the nature of my collection (snow domes are primarily travel souvenirs) means that I spend exceptionally little time and money on it myself. Instead, an ever-increasing army of friends, family and colleagues have embraced the challenge and take great pride in consistently presenting me with snow domes of all shapes, sizes and origins. Whether it's a trashy little must-have piece of kitsch from the local $2 'sh*t shop' or a genuine 1950s collectible piece from a street stall in Verona, they just keep coming, thick and fast! I'm fortunate to have struck on something so ludicrous yet childishly heartwarming that even my most prim, proper and tasteful friends can't resist the urge to join the hunt - it's hilariously gratifying when some of the most upstanding citizens I know return from their travels, proudly bearing treasures ranging from the sublime to ridiculous (e.g. the late and great JPII from Rome, pre-2001 Twin Towers, good old Nessie from Scotland - the list goes on). They're great little historical and cultural snapshots, and extremely affordable, although there is an increasing array of overpriced and truly horrendous Disney and Franklin Mint pieces that people take far too seriously. Nope, none of that psuedo- intrinsic value for me! And what better way to spend otherwise idle hours overseas in transit lounges?! As I tell my friends when they embark on a hunt: 1) the trashier the better; 2) glass is pretentious - go plastic whenever you can; 3) like stamps, flaws can be awesome - if you see a Swiss Alps snow dome with no snow in it, grab it!; and 4) always leave the price tag on.
