A Mobius can be formed by taking a narrow sheet of paper, twisting the ends three times and reconnecting the ends. It's a mathematical term that describes the shape. This was hand carved out of a solid block of "spalted" maple. The black lines you see are bacterial that have worked their wy into a maple log that had fallen on the forest floor and began to decompose. The artist soaks the wood in a bath of chemicals that kills the bacteria and stabilizes the wood. The wood is carved to be 1/8" thick over the whole piece. Amazing craftsmanship.
