Help A Collector: Vintage Pottery Unicorn

This is an item I just discovered today (yesterday, when you read this) in a thrift store: A vintage pottery unicorn head.

Pottery Unicorn Head

This piece is very unusual to me mainly because of its holes.

At first I thought this was some sort of homemade candle holder, where the inserted taper becomes the unicorn’s horn. But once I picked it up, I knew differently. Not that I really know what it is…

It’s rather clear that the horn is in fact missing, as is something on the left side. For in the mane there are two neat, crisp holes, one larger than the other.

Mystery Vintage Unicorn

It is white, heavily glazed and also cold painted, in red; most of which is intact, including the beard.

The crazing, felt bottom and feel of the piece indicate a vintage piece. No marks for maker; it measures 6 ¾ inches tall.

Do you have any idea as to maker or year? Any ideas what all those holes are for?

Any ideas at all?
