Thirteen Symptoms That May Or May Not Mean I Am A Collector

Sometimes I don’t think I’ve a very good collector. There. I’ve said it.

While I have sagging shelves, buckling record bins, cluttered horizontal surfaces, boxes of ephemera, and general piles of stuff, I sometimes get the feeling I’m not a real collector. But maybe I’m just feeling neurotic… I tell you what; I’ll list all my symptoms, and then you tell me if I’m a collector or not. (And if I’m not a collector, maybe you can tell me what I am?)

Thirteen Symptoms That May Or May Not Mean I Am A Collector

1. As I said, I have sagging shelves, buckling record bins, cluttered horizontal surfaces, boxes of ephemera, and general piles of stuff; some of it was purchased with specific intent (i.e. on a list or at least within an actual defined category).

2. As I can (and do!) throw out lids to Cool-Whip bowls, used tinfoil, broken rubber bands, coupons that have expired, etc., I no longer worry I am a hoarder.

3. I devote most all of my free time with my “collectibles.” I read the texts, listen to the audio, & spend hours, days (weeks?) obsessively researching objects, places & people connected to them — no matter how small & obscure the tangents.

4. And then I write about it. Exhibit A: Riding a toy train into Death Valley to meet Native Americans & interred Japanese Americans being photographed by Ansel Adams.)

5. I know of and understand collectible grading systems; but, like square roots, it is meaningless math to me. This is to say that I appreciate value in terms of conditions (and therefore completely believe in inspecting items & sellers’ honest descriptions) — but, for example, when some vintage magazine tickles my fancy, I don’t care so much about a few holes in the old paper. (If you’re looking for some grading guides, see this one for vintage magazines & this one for vinyl records.)

6. I take a deliciously perverse delight in not paying the price marked on stickers and tags; I also will pay a ridiculous amount for something I’ve never seen before, just so I can look at it longer. After negotiating a score (or either variety), I brag about it. Endlessly.

7. And then I’ll write about it.

8. I am perplexed, if not actually saddened, when I hear that a person does not collect anything.

9. I fall in love with the stories about things as much as the things themselves. This includes, but is not limited to, discovering something new (especially if it’s old), the passion a collector has for their collection (or the pursuit thereof), even typos and oddly phrased stories.

1951 Elephant Collection Article

1951 Elephant Collection Article

Exhibit A: This short article from the March 1951 issue of Profitable Hobbies Magazine about Mrs. Alta White of San Lorenzo, California, who collects elephants which reads, “Today her whatnot is full of them.” A lady with a whatnot full of elephants?! In 1951 yet!

10. Often, I’m so charmed by the stories, I covet am inspired to start collecting those things myself.

Exhibit A: Once I stopped laughing over Alta’s article, I briefly considered collecting elephants simply for the joy of recalling “her whatnot full of elephants.” Further fuel to that fire was considering the delight in exclaiming with each elephant acquisition, “Another elephant to squeeze into my whatnot!” (Typing that, elephants remain a collecting possibility.)

11. Sometimes, I’m so oddly charmed & amused by these things, that I’ll nearly pee my pants laughing so hard.

12. And then I write about it.

13. Due to all of the above (plus the basics, such as spending time with family, eating, buying toilet paper because I’ve been eating, etc.), I spend virtually no time dusting my collectibles. (Plus, I believe that dust is a protective patina.)

Antiques:Continuing Our Search in Minnesota and Wisconsin

08.12.08   by Val Ubell 2 Comments »

Down Town Stillwater

Antique Huntin, Stillwater MN

My earlier article talked of our start in the antiques and collectibles ‘biz’ and a recent trip to Hudson, Wisconsin. From there we headed to Stillwater, Minnesota. It’s located very close to the twin cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) and an easy day trip for antique hunters from that area. We’d been there once before, perhaps 4-5 years ago, but it was a ‘pass through’ and we did not get the chance to stop at more than one shop, and that was for a brief visit. We decided that we’d take our time and experience more of them.

Our first stop was the Stillwater Antiques Mall. The folks at the counter were very friendly and helpful. They asked what we were searching for. This is always a difficult one to answer because while we have some favorites, we are very much the generalists, and waiting for the unique item to pop up. They showed us two booths that had sales going on. One lady was almost ready to retire and had 60% off. We found about 10 items in that booth alone. They offer very fine antiques as well as some more moderately priced items and also have an art gallery in one of the wings. We’d rate them pretty high, definitely worth a look-see!

Country Charm Antiques

Country Charm Antiques

We decided to visit Country Charm Antiques next. Wish we’d have known, but they recently had a grand re-opening sale. (There were still some bargains to be had, however.) This mall had extensive damage last fall because of heavy rains, forcing them to close for repairs and reconstruction. We met the owners, Donna Denny and Tom Meidl, who were anxious to point out the additions and improvements they made. The mall was expanded to 6,600 square feet, and it was very well lit, clean and comfortable. It was filled to the max, but no problems getting through the booths (one of our biggest frustrations.) Many of the ‘original dealers’ remained and they now had room for some additional sellers. Very personable pair!

While they had a lot of delightful items, my personal favorite was found at the jewelry counter (those who know me are not at all surprised.) I spotted a gorgeous ring! Turns out it was platinum with diamonds, with a domed top and sparkling moon and stars! I hinted to hubby a lot, but with a price tag over $2,000, he just patted my hand and reminded me that I already have enough rings for each finger. (Oh, well.) Made a few purchases here and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

By now it was almost 2:00 and we knew we’d only have time for one more visit. We grabbed a quick lunch (lots of super restaurants in this area) and then headed over to the largest venue in Stillwater, the Midtown Antique Mall. It is really something – three floors, just filled with a wide variety of antiques and collectibles and incredible furniture too. They have items in all price ranges, an eclectic offering. The staff really hustled for us. Mike is the owner and proved to be friendly and knowledgeable. We also got to meet with Winona who opened cases for us as needed and asked some questions about our interests. Her expertise proved to be very helpful. For example, if we looked at advertising items, she’d usher us to other booths that might have some as well. With 100 dealers in-house, it is not easy to know who has what, but somehow she managed to steer us in the right direction! They’ve been in business for about 17 years and they were proud to tell us that many of the dealers have been with them ’since day one.’ We were able to find quite a few items to bring home! We were spent by the time we left (in more ways than one.) Mike saw that we had two heavy boxes and suggested we drive around to the back of the store and he personally brought them out to us. Now THAT, my friends, is super service. That’s one of the reason they have remained successful. We’ll definitely be back!

We drove down the river road toward LaCrosse, Wisconsin, another delightful antiquing area. Those crossing the Mississippi River on I-90, will find the store from Exit 2 on the Wisconsin side, then travel south to the downtown area.

We stayed overnight, then headed to the LaCrosse Antique Mall. We especially love it that they open earlier than most places, 9:00 AM! We pulled up and the first thing we noticed was their front window. They were emphasizing ‘being green’ as far as antiques go. They had examples or recycling, repairing and re-using, all are great ideas.

We’ve been in this fine mall numerous times and have never been disappointed! There are 37 dealers here, and they offer a wide variety of goods. The prices seem to be ‘realistic’ and there is a good turn-over rate with new treasures being brought in on a regular basis.  The three ladies we met with, Shirley, Joan , and Esther, told us they draw from a wide area and because there are a lot of conventions in or near LaCrosse, they get a steady flow of customers from the hotels and motels nearby. They have been in business for about 23 years and have a unique set-up. There are 9 owners, a partnership, and each works on a rotational basis, generally 3 days a week. Because they have a vested interest in the success of the mall, they keep up-to-date on what has been newly brought in and who specializes in certain items. That way, they can direct shoppers to those booths quite easily. They monitor regularly to ensure that items are of the age and condition that is up to their standards. This mall has three floors, each one worth viewing. (We always try to buy that incredible banister and fretwork leading up the stairs, but to date, have not had any luck!)

We left with a smile on our face and several bags filled with treasures.

It was a wonderful ‘road trip’ and we look forward to others. Have you got a favorite antique mall or shop? We’d love to hear from you! Happy hunting!

Thirteen Great Moments In Collecting

Thursday Thirteen Header

It occurs to me that many of you Thursday Thirteen-ers only stop in here on Thursdays and may not only miss my other great posts, but not even know of the other great writers here at Collectors Quest. So today I’m going to bring you thirteen of my favorite CQ posts — not made by me — in order to show-off the delightful, the charming, CQ writing staff. Each of us are an acquired taste (that’s how we describe ourselves as it sounds nicer than ‘weirdo’), so I’m sure you’ll find others to love along with (not ‘instead of’) me.

I would consider it a personal favor if you read them and left a comment at those posts you find most interesting, illuminating or, as I often do, amusing.

Collin

Collin’s love of action figures and all-things-comic is mind-blowing. Just knowing there are this many heroes and characters is nearly beyond my comprehension, but Collin knows them all. His single-minded obsession might lead you all to think he’s a pasty man-boy who never leaves his parents’ basement — but nay, he does! Not only does he work at the library, but his coverage of events for CQ is proof that this is indeed a man about town — so long as that part of town has comic books or toys.

This (#1) is my favorite post of Collin’s from this year’s toy fair.

I also love it when he’s been on assignment covering things off his usual beat (#2) — seeming as out of sorts as I would be at a comic book convention.

I kid Collin a lot, because well frankly, I’m pretty sure he can’t kick my butt. No, seriously, he’s funny and what’s not to love about a man who is as fond of finger puppets (#3) as I am?

However, my favorite Collin post remains the one about Jeffry Tambor’s pants (#4).

RaydeenDerek (my hubby)

To be fair, most of what hubby writes I already know. Not because I’m big and brainy like that, but because as husband & wife we talk a lot about the stuff we’re going to write here and so I’ve heard it before I’ve read it. But neither that nor my affection for him should dilute a presentation of some Derek linkage.

Derek’s got a love of paper and lots of posts to prove that, but I’m going to ask you to read this post (#5) and this post (#6) and double-dog dare you not to give me some much-deserved sympathy for being the wifey to such a crazy man.

Crazy has its upside too. Collecting Filmstrips (#7) is an indulgence of mine as well and notable for the recent not only projects filmstrips, but plays records — two great tastes that go great together!

Val Uble

Val’s funny (as if you couldn’t tell from her moniker byline) but her posts also have the additional charm of sentimentality which can often be overlooked at many collectible sites and in collecting publications. The result is reading what could otherwise be overheard listening to any grandma talk at the dinner table. If only fresh hot rolls were served as I read them — pass the butter, please!

Cottage Prints

Exhibit A is this piece on cottage prints (#8). And Exhibit B, this bit of history on watch fobs (#9).

I wonder how she’s doing on her New Year’s resolutions? (#10)

Old GrinderThe Dean

Also a grandparent, The Dean waxes a bit nostalgic now and then and provides a perspective on time that offers big-picture context.

In his piece on childhood toys (#11) I was a bit humbled to think of all the Barbies and other toys I had piled in toy boxes and under my bed.

If that piece struck home personally, his posts about obscure and perhaps odd collectibles (#12) reminds us each, again, that anything can be coveted and collected when the right beholder discovers it.

It should remind me to be less snarky and mocking…

But then The Dean reminds me that most collectors are a humorous lot (#13).

The writers here sure prove that.
