Rick Harrison and the Pawn Stars boys are always trying to stock up on Hollywood memorabilia to draw customers into their Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, due to the high demand for and quick turnarounds on movie collectibles. Of course, those two principles only hold true for films that shoppers have heard of. Not Freejack.
On Monday’s episode of the History Channel hit, a man named David brought the futuristic, three-wheeled taxi used in the 1992 critical and commercial flop to the world’s most famous pawn shop. He wanted $13,500 for the vehicle, which actually functions, until Rick pointed out what a dud the Emilio Estevez/Mick Jagger/Anthony Hopkins flick was. Indeed, Freejack opened to negative reviews (it currently holds a 15% at Rotten Tomatoes) and only made $17 million on a $30 million budget, despite the star power attached to it.
“It’s really neat to see how some movies props are built to create something that never existed before. That’s one of the things people just love about them,” Rick admitted during the episode. “But since a lot of people haven’t heard of the movie Freejack, that could have a huge impact on the price.”
David’s initial asking price was knocked down to $5,000 after a consultation with Danny, one of the show’s motor vehicle experts. However, Rick refused to give him more than $4,000 and the seller walked away.
Just like David wanted more from the vehicle than it was worth, Freejack expected a bit too much out of the near future. The movie imagined the world in the year 2009, when the rich could pluck people from the past and use the bodies to extend their own lives. We couldn’t do that yet in 2009, but the iPad came along the next year!
