It was only last week when we delved into the perfect little world of Playmobil and explored some of their Summer Olympics-themed figures, each exploring a sport which is part of this year’s games. While LEGO teased some of their own Olympics minifigures a while back, it was hard for me to get excited. After all, they’re exclusive to the UK, the host of the 2012 Summer Olympics, so my hopes of finding these at the local Toys ‘R’ Us were quickly dashed. And who can pay much attention to a little tennis player when LEGO Gollum and Frodo have just been sent to a LEGO Mount Doom?
Well, it turns out that the LEGO olympians are pretty neat after all.
No, these Summer Olympics LEGOs are still not readily available in the United States, but if you’re a collector of Olympics-themed stuff, these are a pretty great thing to add to your collection. They’re packaged like LEGO’s current collectible minifigure line, which means that they come in little bags, and you don’t know who you’re going to get until you open the bag (or are especially deft at groping your way through plastic to discover the secrets locked inside). At this point, LEGO-bag-groping should be an Olympic event. I need to study some techniques, because I’m tired of getting that damned highland warrior figure over and over.
These all come with special, white ‘Team GB’ bases bearing the Olympic logo… as well as a handful of gold medals for post-victory celebrations. Whether you’re especially interested in swimming, or just can’t get enough horseback riding, these figures represent a fair selection of this year’s competitions. You can currently find them on LEGO’s UK website. Shipping might be a killer, but that little blue barbell in the hands of a LEGO Hulk? Totally worth it.
