In the list of weird, nearly-pointless American holidays, Groundhog Day lists as one of the most inconsequential. After all, using a completely unscientific method to determine the weather by plumbing the depths of a small mammal’s perception is not exactly on the same intellectual plateau as the Hadron Collider… but we do it anyhow, for the same reasons we still observe Daylight Savings Time, and/or the Larry the Cable Guy.

If nothing else, Groundhog Day brought us a rather awesome film. Called, creatively, Groundhog Day. (Or, as it is known in Germany where they don’t have time for such silly holidays, “And Daily Spoke the Groundhog”.

While people have collected different elements of this film (including a laminated placemat from the restaurant scene), there’s one iconic prop which bears mentioning : the Panasonic RC-6025 radio which aoke Bill Murray every morning, on the same morning. Retro radio collectors and film buffs alike have driven the price of this relatively uncommon collectible into the $175 range – and why not? The flipping numbers, the chunky, white body – and the ability to hack into it and play the same song every day, and you have something made of both heaven… and hell.
