Jamie, there's a big difference between 'hoarding' and 'collecting'. No one is rationalizing anything, and if you read the article, clear distinctions have been made.

Your personal experiences don't exactly speak universally.

As a child of a "collector", I can tell you that you are WAY off base when you say that noone suffers for it. But I know all too well the rationalizing that goes on in a hoarders thoughts. Visit my link if you want to see the suffering... http://maintenancefreemom.blogspot.com/

Another fascinating article! It seems that I have been collecting things all of my life, and yet I recall watching my sister 'hoard' her rhinestone jewelry (purchased for a pittance at yard sales) and thinking, what will she do with all that? So, she actually started first and at a younger age. Since then, I have done more than my share. I collect teapots, silver mirrors (large and child's size), paperweights, cottage prints, and of course, costume jewelry! But I can stop anytime I want - I just do not want to.

Yes as Deanna has stated I am doing psychology research. I would welcome any feedback. On a personal note I am a collector of Pez, Plastic dinosaurs, Matchbox cars and anything Spider-man. Yes I do have a CQ account. :)
